About Coconut Coir
Coconut coir is a natural fiber made from the husk of coconuts. It is strong, durable, and 100% biodegradable, making it an excellent eco-friendly alternative to synthetic materials. Coir is widely used in agriculture, horticulture, erosion control, and for products like ropes, mats, and brushes.
Sri Lanka is one of the world’s top exporters of high-quality coconut coir. With rich coconut resources and traditional craftsmanship, Sri Lankan coir products are trusted globally for their quality, sustainability, and performance.
Coir Processing
The processing of coconut coir begins by soaking the coconut husks in water to soften the fibers. Once softened, the fibers are extracted through mechanical or manual methods and then cleaned, sorted, and dried. This process separates the long fibers used for products like ropes and mats, and the finer particles (called pith or coco peat) used in agriculture.
After drying, the coir is compressed, shaped, or spun depending on the final product—such as coir bricks, grow bags, geotextiles, or brushes. Every step of the process is carefully monitored to maintain high quality standards, ensuring the end products are durable, eco-friendly, and ready for export to global mark
